FIELD NOTES ON THE GEOGRAPHY OF LOSS AND THE RADIANCE OF BELIEF
In this immersion, we navigated the periphery—walking through abandoned and forgotten cities where the architecture of grief is integrated into the domestic space. We observed carefully organized graves adjacent to homes—neat gardens and stone sculptures serving as permanent anchors for lost loved ones. Yet, within these landscapes of mourning, we documented a radical hospitality. We were met as long-awaited guests; to the locals, a refusal to stay for a week or a lack of appetite was seen as a personal grievance.
Our Lab recorded stories of systemic horror—war, fear, and memories that rewrite the soul’s internal map. Some realities were nearly impossible to imagine, and once documented, impossible to forget. However, the terminal data point of this research is not the suffering, but the persistence of light. Despite poverty and the arduous cycles of restoration, these lives remain full of belief and a fierce love for their motherland. They are ready to sacrifice everything for a single objective: “To wake up one day and no longer feel the weight of fear, doubt, or loneliness.”
